Jobs in Austin

It is easy to understand why Austin, Texas is rated one of the livable cities in the Nation for the Latino population as well as many other racially diverse populations. It is a city of tolerance, and this tolerance has added to the city’s goal of becoming self-sustaining. Obviously, being so close in geographical location to the Mexican/American Border has allowed illegals to integrate into the Austin workforce much longer than other cities that are just now seeing similar integration in their own workforce. However, Austin seems to have welcomed the slew of new workers looking for jobs in Austin rather than moan about the additional burden on public services as is currently an issue in other parts of the United States. Hiring first generation workers lends to an increasingly diverse workforce and many multinational corporations recognize the opportunity that such diversity presents. The proof seems in the increasing numbers of data center operations and headquarters currently announcing the intent to relocate or already in progress with similar relocation plans.

In addition, the absence of a state corporate income tax as well as no personal state income tax, make Austin an attractive and viable option financially speaking. Yet to suggest Austin has become a top choice among American cities because of the absence of state income tax or a bilingual team, falls short as an explanation for the many relocations seen in 2007 alone. In addition, while Austin enjoys its current influx of businesses and corporations; across the Nation politicians, state governments, counties, and other geographical and political divisions prepare to debate new policy regarding immigration and illegal worker reforms. Austin lacks the strife and ill feelings those others currently face. In fact, this particular city has benefited from an increasingly diverse workforce and accentuates this duality of cultures as a benefit to potentially interested companies.

Perhaps the benefit outweighs the drawbacks, as Austin is a thriving city poised to compete on a global level as more and more international markets open.

Perhaps this diversity of workforce explains why the city of Austin offers a higher standard of living and quality of life despite being the home to the capital city of Texas. In fact, the housing market trends lower than many other comparable U.S. cities. One drawback that remains for Austin is its transportation infrastructure and roadways. Nonetheless, a number of major companies announced moves or future plans to locate within the Austin area. In 2007, the future looks bright for Austin based on a mere eight key sectors alone. They are identified as follows:
  • Semiconductors
  • Medical devices/Bio sciences
  • Data Centers
  • Wireless
  • Automotive
  • Digital Media
  • Clean energy
  • Headquarters and Regional Offices
In fact, Austin made an excellent unveiling of both its promising forward motion towards becoming an entirely self-sustaining city in the future. The presentation’s primary theme being the interlinking of wireless technology and services, automotives, and semiconductors. Add to this the push towards an increasingly “green” future and you recognize the promise that the clean energy sector brings with it.

Strategic geographical location of this particular city explains why many companies, such as CitiGroup, plans to start a new call-center in Austin, a growing digital media market, and improving training and educational programs leading to an increasing number of skilled workers in the workforce. In addition, to further promote and attract new businesses the state offers a comfortable tax climate for both corporations and individuals. Such as those being taken by more and more companies as incentives intended to entice development, research, and implementation of alternative fuel and energy sources. Finally, the last stand out feature that certainly appeals to already established companies is the fact that the state of Texas is working hard and succeeding because it routinely supports both new and existing companies in a similar fashion as it recruits and lures new business. This is something many states and cities fail to do.

This support seems rare when compared with other governments but it absolutely demonstrates a commitment to fairness and excellence which others are encouraged to quickly implement in order to retain existing jobs and keep an economy growing strong. This is what self-sustaining is all about – retention and addition.
