Las Vegas Job Hunt No Gamble

The only not-so-bright spot in the future of Las Vegas employment may be the state of Nevada’s new anti-smoking legislation. While it’s a very bright spot for those who don’t want to pollute their lungs while they work in the hospitality industry, it has nevertheless precipitated the close of a few local bars and restaurants. Casinos, however, are exempt from the smoking ban.

40,000 more hotel rooms are to be added to the Las Vegas tourism landscape. Economists report that these will bring 1.5 new hotel and casino jobs and one more community job search. This alone will translate to another 100,000 jobs in Las Vegas. One specific example of job growth is the MGM Mirage, whose $24 million Project City Center will create a luxurious sales pavilion right on the famous Las Vegas Strip. It will extend from New York New York to Monte Carlo when completed in 2016. The first phase, employing 85, opened for business New Year’s Day.

LasVegasJobs.com, while not a massive job board with fewer than 200 current listings, does have 170,000 registered job seekers and a resume blast program that allows employers to e-mail open positions to qualified job seekers. Job postings offer resume database access, resume screening filters and pre-screening applicant questions. The site is also hosting a spring 2007 job fair where those seeking Las Vegas employment can meet 80 local hiring managers.

For information on Las Vegas jobs, however, you can’t do much better than the online Las Vegas Review-Journal classifieds. Its next job fair sponsorship is this month, and those who can’t attend the live event can take part in an online virtual job fair. Details on the newspaper’s site include a job fair Web video and links to the employer sites. It’s not just about casino jobs here. Hiring employers include two Las Vegas area Chevy dealerships, the Clark County School district, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, several medical facilities, colleges, trade schools, financial institutions, ad agencies, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, major retailers, the North Las Vegas Police Department and Georgia-Pacific.

The Review-Journal’s online job pages offer job clips of select area employers, whose positions are sorted by 15 industry categories. The HSBC video, for example, talks about the bank’s customer service, call center, sales and collections positions, including the banks Web address, phone number and invitation to apply online; Quest Diagnostics invites candidates to its billing job fair, asks them to complete a job application on its Web site and refers back to the Review-Journal for a complete listing of bank openings. A quick search through the paper’s classified job listings and you’ll realize that Las Vegas employment is not just about casinos and night life. Of the more than 4000 job listings on the publisher’s site over 400 are customer service or call center, 685 in the health care field, 106 in real estate, 267 in sales, and a whopping 975 (23 percent) for professional or managerial positions.

Clearly, counting on Las Vegas employment wouldn’t be much of a gamble.
