Jobs in San Francisco

Let us explore employment opportunities in San Francisco, California. First, however, let’s see what the area has to offer its workers. We are all too familiar with the potential for earthquakes and aware of the two major events which have happened in the 1900s. Aside from this, it appears to be a rather healthy city in a progressive state to search for San Francisco jobs.

San Francisco, California serves as the epicenter for some of the largest banks in the United States, along with the Pacific exchange and additional thirty or more international financial institutions. It supports and houses the United States ninth largest airport and fourteenth on an international and global scale. Yet, it ranks among the highest for delays and cancelled flights across the nation. Presently, more than 3000 companies in the San Francisco Bay area are involved in the technology products industry and research and development for such products as semiconductors, computer hardware, accessories, and a number of major software companies call this city their home headquarters. San Francisco companies earn 60% of revenues overseas in computing type industry. Yet, due to increasing global competition and outsourcing which cannot possibly be halted; the locale has recently lost ground in three of its areas of expertise. These areas are engineering jobs focused on cost reduction, fine tuning processes, and expanding product features. Clearly, San Francisco is more involved and integrated with the global economy than other major U.S. cities. In addition, the unemployment rate in this particular county has a lower unemployment rate than the state average throughout the entire year to date in 2007.

With a labor force of 426, 200 as of May 2007 figures, it is a major player in both entrepreneurship and start up technology companies. However, of the total labor force it still has at least 17,200 unemployed workers. The state and neighboring counties, however, are investing in education for a number of laid off manufacturing workers in hopes of transforming this type of human capital into highly skilled applicants to fill positions in briskly growing industries such as biotechnology companies. The major drawback for San Francisco is gridlock and housing shortages which are a matter left to public policy and change if the county and respective city is to continue to experience growth into the future. The trade off, of course, for those living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area is above average starting salaries for skilled workers and open positions waiting to be filled especially in the biotech industry with many companies offering monetary compensations of $35K to $45K for entry level jobs.
